The Knesset passed two controversial bills late Tuesday night, infuriating many MKs from Arab and left-wing parties, who claim the bills are racist and run counter to democratic values.

The "Nakba bill", proposed by Yisrael Beiteinu, requires the state to fine local authorities and other state-funded bodies for holding events marking the Palestinian Nakba Day by supporting armed resistance or racism against Israel, or desecrating the state flag or national symbols.

On Nakba Day Palestinians mark the "catastrophe" of Israel's inception in 1948.

The bill, which was reworked before its final passing, states that the finance minister will be charged with deciding when to withdraw funds from various groups after considering the opinions of the attorney general and a professional team comprised of members of the ministries of finance and justice.

Thirty-seven MKs supported the bill in its final form, while 25 opposed it.

'Thought police in Israel'

MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beiteinu) was among the supporters. "I am not ashamed for wanting to protect this state as a Jewish and democratic state," he said. "You are concerned about democracy, but if your way triumphs there won't be a state."

But critique against the bill was harsh. "On this day the thought police is being established in Israel," said Isaac Herzog (Labor). Herzog added that the bill had been formulated in contrast with the attorney general's recommendations. "It will exacerbate tension in Israel," he said.

MK Dov Khenin (Hadash) called it "another dark night", adding that "this bill will greatly contribute to Israel's de-legitimization in the world".

MK Hanin Zoabi (Balad) was also outraged. "You are creating a monstrous state that will enter the thoughts and emotions of citizens. Is accepting my history considered incitement?" she asked. "The Nakba is a historic truth, not a position or freedom of expression."

Tower at Reagan National Goes Silent as Planes Attempt to Land

Washington Post Local | The control tower at Reagan National Airport went silent early Wednesday, forcing two airliners carrying a total of 165 passengers and crew to land on their own.

The tower did not respond to pilot requests for landing assistance or to phone calls from controllers elsewhere in the region, who also used a “shout line” which pipes into a loudspeaker in the tower, internal records show.

An American Airlines Boeing 737 flying in from Miami with 97 on board aborted its landing and circled the airport after getting no response from the tower at midnight. Minutes later a United Airlines Airbus 320 flying in from Chicago with 68 passengers and crew also received no answer from the tower.

Both planes landed safely after their pilots took matters into their own hands, broadcasting their progress as they approached and landed. They were also communicating with controllers at a separate facility in the region that does not handle landings.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, agency spokeswoman Laura J. Brown said in a statement.

“The pilots were in contact with air traffic controllers at the Potomac TRACON, which hands off flights to the tower shortly before they land, and both aircraft landed safely,” she said. “The FAA is looking into staffing issues and whether existing procedures were followed appropriately. “

The incident, which is under review by the National Transportation Safety Board, is the second time in as many years that the tower at National has gone silent for a period of time, said a source familiar with tower operations who asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak for the FAA. The previous time, the lone controller on duty left his swipe-card pass key behind when he stepped outside the tower’s secure door and wasn’t able to get back in, the source said.

A controller at another facility even talked about that incident as the pilots were trying to land Wednesday morning.

It should be self-evident to readers of how dangerously pervasive these corporations have become in our daily lives. Finally, it should be self-evident as to how necessary it is to excise these corporations from our lives, our communities, and ultimately our nations, with the utmost expediency.

Carry envelopes and offer to mail them in. Have a few envelopes handy already addressed and stamped for effect.

If they have their children with them, have them sign them up if they are at least 17 [parental consent if they are not 18] as I did between my junior/senior year, on delayed enlistment for a year to get out of Florida's economic impoverishment for my six year stint. This would work nicely if they are in a crowd and much better should you be able to video the confrontation and post on youtube. Make them prove their cowardice or patriotism to the security-military-industrial complex by making a personal sacrifice. I'd like to see Obama's daughters sign up or at least someone ask at a press conference ask when they will be joining for daddy's humanitarian efforts or at one of his personal interactions at a greasy spoon during his constant vacationing [he surpassed Shrub now].
