What is “BuildingWhat?”

More than eight years after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, New York Supreme Court Justice Edward H. Lehner was hearing arguments in a courtroom less than a mile from Ground Zero about a ballot initiative to launch a new investigation of the 9/11 attacks. When the lawyer for the plaintiffs sponsoring the initiative explained that the 9/11 Commission report left many unanswered questions, including “Why did Building 7 come down,” the Judge replied quizzically, “Building what?”
Like Judge Lehner, millions of people do not know or remember only vaguely that a third tower called World Trade Center Building 7 also collapsed on September 11, 2001. In any other situation, the complete, free fall collapse of a 47-story skyscraper would be played over and over on the news. It would be discussed for years to come and building design codes would be completely rewritten. So, why does no one know about Building 7? And why did Building 7 come down?
The answers to these questions have far-reaching implications for our society. The goal of the “BuildingWhat?” campaign is to raise awareness of Building 7 so that together we can begin to address these questions.

What is Building 7?

Building 7 was a 47-story skyscraper and was part of the World Trade Center complex. Built in 1984, it would have been the tallest high-rise in 33 states in the United States. It collapsed at 5:20 pm on September 11, 2001. It was not hit by an airplane and suffered minimal damage compared to other buildings much closer to the Twin Towers.

    7 Facts about Building 7

Building 7 was a 47-story skyscraper and was part of the World Trade Center complex. Built in 1984, it would have been the tallest high-rise in 33 states in the United States. It collapsed at 5:20 pm on September 11, 2001. It was not hit by an airplane and suffered minimal damage compared to other buildings much closer to the Twin Towers.

    1) If fire caused Building 7 to collapse, it would be the first ever fire-induced collapse of a steel-frame high-rise.
    2) Building 7’s collapse was not mentioned in the 9/11 Commission Report.
    3) According to a Zogby poll in 2006, 43% of Americans did not know about Building 7.
    4) It took the federal government seven years to conduct an investigation and issue a report for Building 7.
    5) 1,250 architects and engineers have signed a petition calling for a new investigation that would include a full inquiry into the possible use of explosives for the collapse of Building 7.
    6) Numerous witnesses say the possibility of demolishing Building 7 was widely discussed by emergency personnel at the scene and advocated by the building’s owner.
    7) Building 7 housed several intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and the NYC Office of Emergency Management’s Emergency Operations Center, more commonly known as “Giuliani’s Bunker”.

Building 7 was as far from the towers as several other large buildings outside of the WTC complex.  It was more than 300 feet from the nearest wall of the North Tower.  Building 6 stood between the North Tower and Building 7 as seen in this map:

In addition to the Twin Towers and Building 7, the World Trade Center complex included buildings 3, 4, 5, and 6. Compared to Building 7, all of these buildings were severely damaged, first by falling rubble from the tower collapses, then by fires that burned for hours. Although these buildings were in critical condition, none of them collapsed.

    Ongoing Advocacy

Millions of people across the globe are learning that we were not given the truth about the events of September 11th and they are now beginning to ask public officials to re-investigate and get to the bottom of what happened.
NYC CAN and Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth are leading the way in educating our public officials and asking them to open a new and independent 9/11 investigation which would include an inquiry into the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7.

In early 2010, NYC CAN — on behalf of 9/11 families, first responders, survivors and millions of concerned citizens worldwide — educated the entire 51-member New York City Council through two separate phone and fax campaigns. Over a period of several weeks, more than 1,000 concerned citizens got involved in contacting the offices of three council members per day to inform them about the collapse of Building 7, which until 9/11 housed the Emergency Operations Center for the NYC Office of Emergency Management.
Concurrently, NYC CAN and members of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth have met with 11 council members and their staff, and plan to continue meeting with them until the City Council takes action. In June 2010, NYC CAN also coordinated a letter-writing campaign to the Manhattan District Attorney during which more than 1,000 letters were sent laying out the evidence that Building 7 was demolished with explosives, and suggesting ways for the DA to start an investigation.

Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth, now representing more than 1,250 licensed architect and engineer petition signers and 9,000 others, went to Washington DC last year and met with staff from several congressional representatives together with a constituent to deliver information on the evidence of the explosive destruction of the World Trade Center 1, 2 and 7. One congressman was compelled by the evidence and wrote a letter to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) asking about the investigation of nanothermite, an explosive incendiary found by a team of scientists in every WTC dust sample they tested. Unfortunately, to date, NIST has only responded with boilerplate letters.
This September AE911Truth returns to Washington DC to visit more congress members and to hold a major press conference on 9/9/10 followed by a debate at the National Press Club. Also, AE911Truth will deliver VIP packets with DVDs to all 535 congressional members.
